A Timeline of Computer Science at Michigan Tech
1973 | The Michigan Tech Faculty Senate approves the university’s first undergraduate Computer Science curriculum.
1974 | The first Bachelor of Science in Computer Science degree is awarded.
1977 | The Department of Mathematics becomes the Department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
1981 | The Master of Science in Computer Science is added.
1982 | The first M.S. in Computer Science is awarded.
1984 | Computer Science becomes a separate department within the College of Science and Arts.
1987 | The Department of Computer Science is launched.
1994 | The Ph.D. in Computational Science and Engineering, Michigan Tech’s first computing-focused doctoral program, is approved.
2001 | The Ph.D. in Computer Science is established.
2003 | The B.S. in Software Engineering is established.
2003 | Construction of the Ann and Kanwal Rekhi Hall begins.
2005 | The Computer Science department moves into Rekhi Hall. The official dedication takes place on April 29.
2015 | The M.S. in Data Science is established.
2016 | The M.S. in Cybersecurity is launched.
2019 | The College of Computing is approved by the Michigan Tech Board of Trustees in April. The new academic unit comprises the Department of Computer Science and the new Department of Applied Computing.
2019 | The B.S. in Cybersecurity is launched as a shared program with the Department of Applied Computing.
2021 | The M.S. in Data Science is moved to the Department of Computer Science.
2023 | The B.S. in Data Science is launched and the MS in Applied Computer Science is established.
