Biography

Elena Semouchkina is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan Tech. She received an MS in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Physics and Mathematics from Tomsk State University in Russia, and a second PhD in Materials from Penn State. Before joining the Penn State faculty, Semouchkina had been working in Siberian Physics-Technical Research Institute, Ioffe Physics-Technical Institute of Russian Academy of Science, and St. Petersburg State Technical University. She was a recipient of the best PhD thesis award from the Penn State Materials Research Institute and the NSF Fellows Award from the ADVANCE Program: Increasing the Participation and Advancement of Women in Academic Science and Engineering Careers. Semouchkina has served six-years term as an associate editor of the IEEE Antenna and Wireless Propagation Letters, a guest editor of the special issue “Dielectric Metamaterials” of Applied Sciences, a co-organizer of the IEEE Women in Electromagnetics (WiEM) Workshop, a panelist of the National Science Foundation, and an expert of the Directorate-General for Research of the European Commission and of the French National Research Agency. Her work was featured at the NSF “Discoveries” website, in NSF “Behind the Scenes” series, in IEEE “Women in Engineering” eBook, in IEEE Magazine “Women in Engineering”, and in IEEE “Women in Engineering” Poster, where she was profiled among 12 women-engineers “Who change the world”. Semouchkina is the author of the book “Dielectric Metamaterials and Metasurfaces in Transformation Optics and Photonics” published by ELSEVIER, Woodhead Publishing Series in Electronic and Optical Materials, in 2021.
