Graduate Degree Programs
Civil Engineering (Emphasis on Structural Engineering)—MS
The program emphasizes structural engineering and focuses on expanding the civil engineer’s capabilities. Students learn advanced design techniques, including seismic design, examine structural dynamics, dig deeper into building code, and further examine the materials that create our world. The program prepares students to take the lead on more advanced civil engineering projects, pursue new career opportunities, and succeed in supervisory roles.
Civil Engineering (Emphasis on Water Resources Engineering)—MS
The program is focused on water resources engineering and expanding your capabilities as a civil engineer. Learn advanced design and modeling techniques in hydraulics and hydrology. Design, plan, and manage advanced water resources projects ranging from site to watershed scales.
Electrical Engineering (Emphasis on Power Systems)—MS
This program enables professionals to earn course credit at their convenience. Off-campus students enroll in the same classes as on-campus students, following the same syllabi, schedules, and, with a few exceptions, course work.
Energy systems emphasize power systems, with renewable energy and power electronics as other major areas of interest. Online courses are taught by a panel of expert faculty whose interests are focused in energy systems.
Master of Engineering (Emphasis on Hybrid Electric Drive Vehicle Engineering)—MEng
The master's degree with an emphasis on hybrid electric drive vehicle engineering provides students with an advanced program in the design, calibration, and operating characteristics of electric-drive and hybrid-drive vehicles. The 30-credit MEng program is based on a distance-learning course initially developed by Michigan Tech, General Motors, and AVL, and selected by the Michigan Academy of Green Mobility for training automotive engineers. A Department of Energy grant funded the development of the full curriculum and mobile laboratory. The interdisciplinary program was designed with input from Argonne National Laboratory and the following industry partners: MAGMA, General Motors, Eaton, Horiba, MathWorks, Schweitzer Engineering Labs, and Woodward.
Mechanical Engineering—MS
Join one of the nation’s largest MAE departments, and work with scholars to achieve technological, environmental, industrial, and societal sustainability. Our graduate program is ranked in the nation’s top fifty by US News & World Report. Distance-learning, research-based MS and PhD degrees maintain the high standards of Michigan Tech graduate education. The public defense of theses, dissertations, reports, and projects normally occurs on campus. Students in partnered programs may take up to one-third of the required course work credits from other universities, with prior approval. PhD students are admitted and conduct research with the same standards and rigor as on-campus students; thus, they should be working in a corporate, federal, or similar R&D environment. Research credit fees or a formal research contract may be required.

Graduate Certificate Programs
Advanced Electric Power Engineering—Certificate
A shortage of engineering talent in the US electrical energy industry has created a need for highly trained staff who are qualified to handle research and development and the application of new technology. All lectures will be offered online to accommodate engineers’ work schedules.
This 15-credit program provides students with advanced knowledge of the operation and design of electric power systems. It is designed, in consultation with electric utilities, to address continuing education needs. Students must have a degree in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Students may apply the credits earned for this certificate toward a graduate degree at Michigan Tech.
Automotive Systems and Controls—Certificate
Students completing this interdisciplinary certificate will develop competencies in controls, systems engineering, and systems integration, encompassing multiple aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering with a primary focus on automotive applications.
Safety and Security of Autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems—Certificate
Students completing this certificate will demonstrate competencies in the hierarchical design, control, and integration of technologies into cyber-physical components and systems including modern networked and autonomous mobile systems for land, air, and water.
