Happy and Bright
Plants as Skating Ice
Established: 2009
Location: south side of the Student Development Complex
This memorial garden, in honor of one of the most ardent supporters of Michigan Tech athletics, is a happy, south-facing hotbed. The dusty miller returns every year, representing skating ice. Near the plaque honoring the distinguished teacher, MTU Skating Academy founder, 20-year Huskies Club member, and major player in getting women's athletics started at Tech, symbolic hen and chicks, fragrant creeping thyme, and low junipers reinforce other ground covers in an intricate carpet to aid in weed suppression. Yellow was Cheryl’s favorite color, which is why dwarf evening primrose accents the statue. The figure, a skater preparing for competition, seems to weep after a rain.
