The Grounds Department is now hiring for the following positions:
SUMMARY:
Assist the University Gardener with the routine maintenance of the University’s outdoor
vegetable
and ornamental gardens and indoor plant installments; assisting in landscape construction
and
nursery maintenance; amending soils, or applying mulch and compost; planting, watering,
weeding,
and fertilizing of annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs; dividing and propagating
perennials; pruning
perennials, trees and shrubs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Perform the tasks outlined above as they are assigned via Maintenance Direct®, the
Department of
Facilities Management’s work order management system.
-Tasks may include the use and operation of a pickup truck equipped with a lift gate,
and operation of push lawn mowers and gas-powered weed trimmers. Performance of these
essential duties and
responsibilities may require the use of a step ladder, lifting up to 50 pounds, as
well as a variety of
repetitive motions.
-Be responsible for cleaning, sanitation, and safety in assigned grounds, shop, or
work areas and
generally assist the University Gardener with these duties as projects are assigned.
-Must be able to successfully complete any required safety training. Supervision and
safety training
will be overseen by the University Gardener. The University Gardener will provide
task-specific
training and direction on individual projects.
-Hand tools used will include spades, loppers, bypass pruners, rakes, hoes, axes,
bow saws,
among others. Mechanical weed whackers and other small power tools will also be used.

Must be enrolled at Michigan Technological University and a student in good academic

Ability to adapt to frequently changing work environments, conditions, and work
schedules.
Ability to perform tasks involving climbing, lifting, handling of materials and
supplies, moving
materials and equipment, and working from ladders.
Ability to utilize personal portable electronic devices to communicate, integrate
applications to
manage tasks, and access electronic databases.
Available to work mornings, beginning at 7:00 AM.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand;
walk; sit; climb
or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and reach with hands and arms. The employee
is regularly
required to talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel an object; taste or
smell; and be able to
communicate with others via mobile phone or radio.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, and
peripheral vision; depth
perception; and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasionally lifting
and/or moving
more than 100 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this job the employee may work near moving mechanical
parts. The
employee must regularly work in all outdoor weather conditions including blizzards,
storms, hail,
wind, rain, fog, extreme heat, extreme cold, and sunshine.
The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including gloves, reflective vests, hearing protection,
and
safety glasses will be furnished by the University. Protective footwear, in the form
of
steel/composite toe safety shoes will be furnished by the student.

lifting up to 50 pounds, as well as a variety of repetitive motions.

heavy equipment, University-owned vehicles, campus equipment and mechanical building
systems and a variety of other projects.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Perform the tasks outlined above as they are assigned via Maintenance Direct®, the
Department
of Facilities Management’s work order management system. Tasks may include the use
and
operation of a pickup truck equipped with a lift gate, operation of hand tools, pneumatic
tools,
welders, steam cleaners/power washers, and painting equipment.
-Be responsible for cleaning, sanitation, and safety in assigned shop or work areas
and generally
assist the Maintenance Mechanic with these duties as projects are assigned.
-Must be able to successfully complete any required safety training by the specified
due date.
Supervision and safety training will be overseen by the Site Engineer. The Site Engineer
and
Maintenance Mechanic will provide task-specific training and direction on individual
projects.
-Performance of these essential duties and responsibilities may require the use of
a step ladder,
lifting up to 100 pounds, as well as a variety of repetitive motions.

Experience in the operation of light and heavy equipment is desirable, but not required
for
this position.

Responsibilities include lawn and garden care, moving furniture, trash and recycling collection, and similar work.
Work hours are Monday - Friday 7:00AM to 3:30PM with an opportunity to work up to 40 hours per week. Starting wage is $10.10 per hour, negotiable based on experience. Applicants must hold a valid driver's license.
