HomeTracker Software

HomeTracker is a novel software application developed for the FEWCON project that collects household food, energy, and water (FEW) consumption data and provides feedback to households on their environmental impact.

The web-based software tracks electricity use and facilitates input of natural gas use, water use, and food purchases. A hybrid life cycle assessment (LCA) model translates household FEW consumption levels into key environmental impacts and displays these impacts to users:

  • greenhouse gas emissions
  • direct and indirect energy use
  • direct and indirect water use

What Else Can HomeTracker Be Used For?

HomeTracker can also be used by researchers to send intervention messages to users and link to surveys for the collection of information on demographics, home structural characteristics, and attitudes and behaviors that may affect consumption levels.

How Was HomeTracker Built?

The HomeTracker application is built using Grails, an open-source Java-based framework that uses the Apache Groovy programming language, with Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) between the application and the MariaDB relational database management system.

Users can access HomeTracker through any device that supports a standard web browser
