The amount of Federal Direct Loans that a student can borrow depends on their grade level.
How much can I borrow each year?
- Dependent freshmen may be able to borrow up to $5,500 per year. Up to $3,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Independent freshmen may be able to borrow up to $9,500 per year. Up to $3,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Dependent sophomores may be able to borrow up to $6,500 per year. Up to $4,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Independent sophomores may be able to borrow up to $10,500 per year. Up to $4,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Dependent juniors may be able to borrow up to $7,500 per year. Up to $5,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Independent juniors may be able to borrow up to $12,500 per year. Up to $5,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Dependent seniors may be able to borrow up to $7,500 per year*. Up to $5,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Independent seniors may be able to borrow up to $12,500 per year*. Up to $5,500 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
Graduate students may be able to borrow up to $20,500 per year. Graduate students are not eligible to receive subsidized loans.
How much can I borrow in my lifetime?
- Dependent students may be able to borrow up to $31,000 in their lifetime. Up to $23,000 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
- Independent students may be able to borrow up to $57,500 in their lifetime. Up to $23,000 of that amount may be subsidized if the student has enough financial need.
