The Military Family Education Award is available for new incoming undergraduate students
who are non-Michigan residents, the child of an active duty service member of a Uniformed
Service (as defined below), and are under the age of 24. The award is also available
for new incoming undergraduate students who are non-Michigan residents and are the
spouse of an active duty member of a Uniformed Service (as defined by below).
Eligible students can receive an award equal to the difference between nonresident
and resident tuition (valued over $20,000 per year).
New incoming undergraduate students can indicate eligibility through the admission
application process or by contacting the Admissions Office at 888-688-1885 or mtu4u@mtu.edu. Students must then present Official Orders or Military ID to the Admissions Office
prior to the beginning of classes.
Uniformed Service Requirement
The uniformed service requirement as defined by Title 10 of the US Code includes:
- Air Force
- Army
- Coast Guard
- Marines
- Navy
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps (NOAA Corps)
- United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC)
- National Guard and Reserve members activated for 365 days or greater
- Merchant Marine Academy
This award will remain with the student for the entirety of their undergraduate education
so long as they remain in good academic and disciplinary standing, even if the active
duty status of the family member changes.
Recipients of the Military Family Education Award are not eligible for the National
Scholars Program, the Presidential Scholars Program, the Alumni Legacy Award, the
University Student Aid Grant (USA), or the International Ambassador Scholarship. They may, however, be eligible for need based federal aid and/or private scholarship
funds.
