The College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science maintains established funds for undergraduate scholarships. This support—averaging $7,333 per CFRES student annually—enables us to be a nationwide leader in forest resources and environmental science programs, attracting high-caliber students.
Alumni-Established Scholarships
Our generous alumni set up several scholarship funds to directly benefit students in all four of our undergraduate programs. You can help keep them growing.
The Forestry Alumni Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to an upperclassman in the College. It is renewable as a long as the student maintains a 3.0 grade point average.
This scholarship assists academically deserving students with demonstrated financial need. The scholarship, which may be awarded to any undergraduate in the College, is renewable for up to five academic years if the student maintains a 2.5 grade point average. If a recipient loses eligibility, the remainder of the award or any prorated portion is returned to the principal.
This scholarship is funded by female alumnae of the College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science and provides financial assistance to current and incoming students pursuing a major in one of the College's degree programs. Renewable as long as the student maintains a GPA of 2.5.
The Arthur J. Dion Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to current and incoming students who are Upper Peninsula residents with demonstrated financial need. It is renewable as long as the student maintains a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
The Edward C. Henricksen Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to forestry students who are Michigan residents with an interest in the industrial sector. It is renewable as long as the student maintains a cumulative 2.5 grade point average.
The William Ruona Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to forestry students from the Upper Peninsula with proven academic performance. It is renewable as long as the student maintains a cumulative 2.5 grade point average.
The William Todd Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to current or incoming students. Preference is given to—in order of priority—students who attended Marquette Senior High School, students who attended high school in Marquette County, or students who attended high school in the Upper Peninsula. To be considered, applicants must demonstrate financial need and sound academic performance. The scholarship is renewable for up to four academic years as long as the student maintains a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
The John B. and Mae M. Hakala Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial support to sophomore, junior, and senior students studying forestry or wildlife management with proven academic performance. If no eligible students can be identified within the College, the scholarship may be awarded to students studying biological sciences. The scholarship is renewable as long as the student maintains a 2.5 grade point average.
The Jacques and Vann Jorgensen Endowed Scholarship provides financial support to forestry and wildlife ecology majors. The scholarship is renewable.
The C. Raymond Lowe Endowed Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to students from mid-Michigan or the Upper Peninsula studying forestry or environmental engineering at Michigan Tech. It is renewable for up to five academic years if the student maintains cumulative 2.5 grade point average.
Faculty-Established Scholarships
Recognizing the importance of our undergraduate programs, several of the College’s faculty members and their families established scholarships to help current students, while honoring their teaching legacies.
The Gene Hesterberg Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to an upperclassman with sound academic performance and social and civic leadership who participates in campus and professional affairs. It is renewable as a long as the student maintains a 2.5 grade point average.
The Helmuth and Charlotte Steinhilb Endowed Scholarship provides financial support to current or incoming students. Preference is given to—in order of priority—graduates of Jeffers High School, graduates of Houghton and Keweenaw county high schools, graduates of Upper Peninsula high schools, or graduates of Michigan high schools. It is renewable for up to five academic years if the student maintains a cumulative 2.5 grade point average.
The Professor U. J. Noblet Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to Upper Peninsula residents studying forestry. It is renewable as long as the student maintains a cumulative 2.5 grade point average.
The Norman Sloan Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to a senior. Selection criteria include service within the School and the University, and an interest in wildlife.
The John C. Noblet Memorial Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to a sophomore forestry major from the Upper Peninsula. It is renewable if the student maintains a 2.5 grade point average.
Friends-Established Scholarships
Many friends of the College help our undergraduates through scholarships. Several of the scholarships are memorials and tributes to former students.
The Robert L. Adams Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to students studying forestry. It is renewable for up to five academic years if the student maintains a 2.5 cumulative grade point average.
The Charles and Patricia Nelson Endowed Scholarship provides financial assistance to current and incoming students who are Michigan residents with demonstrated financial need. It is renewable as long as the student maintains a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
The James C. Lamy Endowed Scholarship provides full-tuition awards to current or incoming students, with preference given to entering freshmen with a strong interest in forest management, demonstrated leadership, sound academic performance, and who are residents of—in order of priority—Michigan, the Great Lakes region, or the US. If all the preceding criteria are equal in candidates, preference is given to students with financial need. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years if the student maintains a minimum 2.5 grade point average for each academic year.
