Tax Accounting

This area of Financial Services and Operations coordinates the submission of various university tax filings, as well as monitors and promotes compliance with relevant Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and State of Michigan regulations. Our responsibilities include

  1. Furnishing Nonresident Alien Tax Information—Various IRS tax forms and tax treaty information
  2. Preparing and submitting Michigan Tech’s Tax Form 990T—Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT)
  3. Preparing and issuing Form 1099 series —This may include payments made for independent contractors, medical payments, attorney fees, royalties, rents, prizes, and awards
  4. Preparing and issuing Form 1042 and 1042-S—This may include payments made to international independent contractors, visiting scholars, and students, and applicable federal tax withheld
  5. Determining taxability of moving reimbursements, employee educational assistance, and TRIP benefits
  6. Consulting on the preparation and issuance of Form 1098-T
  7. Conducting tax research as necessary and advising various departments on the tax consequences of University transactions
  8. Administering federal and state regulations, with University policies and procedures, to ensure tax compliance in all tax matters applicable to Michigan Tech

Tax Preparation

This area does not assist in the preparation of tax returns on an individual basis. Consult your local tax advisor or the IRS for individual tax matters. This area cannot act as a representative for an individual in tax issues with the IRS.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is available for domestic and resident alien individuals for assistance in completion of the tax returns. For additional information on this program, contact the College of Business.
