When Bhakta Rath arrived in Houghton on January 2, 1956, from Cuttack, India, he had never experienced weather colder than 60 degrees, and his warmest clothes were a double-breasted suit and a light overcoat.
By his own admission, Tom Barley has had a great life. “I had a 45-year, all-expenses-paid tour of the world, all with the same company,” he says. “We moved 13 times, and my wife loved to travel. It was very enjoyable.”
Michigan Tech has been part of Pat Horvath’s life almost as long as he can remember. Born and raised in the UP, he set his sights early on attending the University. “All while I was going to high school in Stephenson, Michigan Tech was in my vision,” he says.
By any measure, Laura Farrelly, Pamela Klyn, and Paula Wittbrodt lead fulfilling lives, and each attributes a big chunk of her success to Michigan Tech. But they also give credit to the big brown house at the corner of College Avenue and Agate Street.
Two Michigan Tech trailblazers gathered at the Husky Statue Plaza during Alumni Reunion 2018 and shook hands for the first time. Both have made their mark at Michigan Tech: first, as women in an academic community made up almost exclusively of men, second as donors whose gifts have made a profound impact. They share a passion for providing their time, talent, and treasure to make the University even better.
