Earn Your Structural Engineering Certificate in Bridge Design from One of the Nation's Most Respected Engineering Schools.
Bridge structure design is a subset of civil engineering. Bridge structure engineers are responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining bridges and structures that span bodies of water, valleys, and other obstacles. They not only ensure that these structures are safe, but also minimize their environmental impact. In addition to designing structures, they inspect existing bridges for safety, develop plans for repairs and maintenance, and coordinate construction activities.
To do their jobs correctly, these engineers must also keep pace with recent developments in bridge structure and design, such as the use of composite materials (fiber-reinforced concrete), modular construction, and self-healing infrastructure (the use of sensors and other technologies to detect and repair bridge damage in a timely manner).
Earning an online structural engineering certificate in bridge structure design from Michigan Technological University will give you expertise in the complexity of bridge engineering.
Take Essential Bridge Design Courses.
When you study bridge analysis and design courses at MTU, you’ll take classes that prioritize applying theory and methods to real-world situations.
All students in the bridge structure design program will take the same required course: CEE5261, Bridge Design and Construction. This fundamental course covers the basics of AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) design criteria. These criteria include loading and load effects, as well as the design of steel and concrete superstructure and substructure components. CEE5261 also introduces you to related bridge-management topics, such as inspection, load rating, and asset management.
After completing this required course, you can then broaden your knowledge of bridge engineering by taking two additional structural design courses.
When planning your program, always check the course registration page for the availability of classes.

Lay the Foundation For Future Graduate Study.
Our certificate in bridge analysis and design was created to help aspiring professionals like you build a strong foundation upon which to advance your career.
But you can also continue learning, using this certificate to launch into graduate studies. That is, you can stack this certificate with other structural engineering certificates to build a customizable master's degree. You graduate not only with a master's degree but also three focused credentials.
For instance, the chart below demonstrates how you can build your advanced degree from one required course and three structural engineering certificates: Bridge Analysis and Design, Hazard Analysis, and Building Design. Alternatively, you could combine your bridge certificate with another two certificates; there are four from which you can choose.
This certificate is also available on campus.
