Dean's Award for Outstanding Scholarship Nomination Procedures

Exceptional graduate students may be nominated by their program or department for the Dean's Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the year of their graduation. Nominees will have demonstrated academic or professional qualities that set them apart within their academic program. Nominations are made each fall and spring semester.

Eligibility

Students are eligible if all of the following criteria are met:

  1. Must be a Michigan Tech graduate student.
  2. Must be on track to complete their degree in the semester nominated. Summer graduates may be nominated in the fall or spring. 
  3. Must be nominated by the student's academic college or department. 

Nomination Procedure

Each academic college or department may recommend at least one and no more than 1% of its total graduate student enrollment to receive this award each academic-year semester. The names of the nominee(s) for this award should be forwarded to the dean of the Graduate School at least nine weeks prior to fall or spring commencement. Students who graduate during the summer can be nominated in fall or spring.

Evaluation

Each academic college and department may nominate recipients based on their own selection criteria and process.  Selection criteria could include, but are not limited to:

  • GPA
  • Involvement or leadership within their college or department
  • Originality in research
  • Conference papers, proceedings, presentations or poster sessions
  • Publications
  • Thesis or dissertation quality
  • Grant money
  • Teamwork
  • Professionalism
  • Student ratings of instruction
  • Work Ethic

Notification

Students will be presented with a Certificate of Recognition at the Graduate Student Government award ceremony that is held in the spring. Certificates of Recognition will be mailed to students who have already left campus. Students receiving the award will also be identified by name in the appropriate commencement programs.
