How to Use the Makerspace

Visit The Alley and create/sign in to your account.
Get trained on any desired tools. That's what the coaches are there for!
Start creating! But remember, tools and equipment must remain in the space.
Sign out before leaving.

FAQs

Who can use the space?

Faculty, staff, students, and student organizations have access and can utilize the makerspace.

Community members and external groups do not have access currently.

How much does it cost to use the Makerspace?

The Makerspace is free for all Michigan Tech students, faculty, and staff.

Do I need prior experience?

No prior experience is needed! Coaches are available to provide training.

What safety measures are in place?

All users must follow posted safety guidelines and listen to instructions from on-duty coaches.

Training is required for tool use.

Safety goggles and other personal protective equipment are provided as needed.

Safety procedures are enforced by all of our coaches.

Do I need to bring my own materials?

Basic materials like wood, yarn, and 3D filament are provided while supplies last.

Makers can bring additional supplies if needed.

Can I store my project in the Makerspace?

Limited storage is available for ongoing projects. Check with a coach for details.

Are there group or class sessions available?

Yes, workshops and training sessions are offered regularly. Check the calendar or contact makerspace@mtu.edu for details.

What if I have an idea but don’t know where to start?

Coaches and mentors are available to guide you through the process and help turn your idea into reality.

Can I use the Makerspace for personal projects or only academic ones?

You are welcome to use the space for both personal and academic projects, as long as you follow all guidelines.

A Legacy of Creativity and Community

The Alley Makerspace, opened in 2016, has a rich history rooted in Michigan Tech’s Memorial Union. Before it became the vibrant creative hub it is today, this space was home to the university’s bowling alley—a beloved feature of the student union.

In 2014, the decision was made to transform the bowling alley into a makerspace, its legacy was honored in both name and design. The name “The Alley” reflects its origins, preserving the connection to its past. Even more special, the wooden lanes from the original bowling alley were carefully repurposed and now form part of the Makerspace flooring, blending history and innovation in a single space.

Today, The Alley Makerspace stands as a tribute to its roots, fostering creativity, collaboration, and hands-on learning for Michigan Tech’s students, faculty, and staff. It’s a space where ideas roll forward, just like bowling balls once did down those very lanes.
