Are you an incoming Michigan Tech student planning to join the Pavlis Honors College? Make your first year unforgettable by living in the Pavlis Living and Learning Community (LLC)! Exclusively for first-year students enrolled in HON1150, the LLC is the perfect place to connect with others who share your drive to excel and make the most of your Michigan Tech experience. You'll bond over your shared interest in the Honors College while benefiting from a vibrant and diverse community of students from different majors, backgrounds, and perspectives. It's more than a place to live—it's a space to thrive!

Build relationships

You will be enrolled in HON1150: Creating Your Path. In this course, you'll learn life design methods to create a path to help you achieve your personal educational, career, and life goals.
Your RAs are current Pavlis students, and you'll connect with other Pavlis students who want to help you make your stay (and Michigan Tech as a whole) as rewarding as possible. If you have a question about your classes, are feeling homesick, or need help figuring out the washing machines, we'll connect you with a friendly face and a voice of experience.
You'll make connections throughout the Michigan Tech community and beyond with (optional!) activities throughout the year for you to get to know your hallmates, other Pavlis students, staff, faculty, and industry partners. From casual movie nights in the hall to catered meet-and-greets with Career Fair recruiters, there's something for everyone.

An award-winning hall

Just two months into its first year, the Pavlis LLC won the September 2019 Best Residential Community, regional level award from the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH). The nomination letter from Michigan Tech Residence Education and Housing Services encapsulated so much about what makes our community special:

"The Pavlis Honors College came to Residence Education and Housing Services a couple of years ago and proposed a true living-learning community on the Michigan Tech campus. They had a dream of a group of pre-admission honors college students who would live together and uphold the values of the Pavlis Honors College as they explored their major, the university, the College, and themselves.

The Pavlis LLC opened this semester and has been thriving in the month of September. The community includes about 70 residents and 2 Resident Assistants living in traditional and suite-style rooms. This group of first-year students has had outstanding participation in community events and Michigan Tech Traditions. During Keweenaw Day, our celebration of clubs and organizations, the Pavlis Honors Community filled up an entire school bus heading to the event, making sure that no one was left behind.

The community has also been active in self-governance and regularly spends time thinking about their values. In the month of September, they have been working with their RAs and the faculty and staff in the college. They ended up planning a college-wide event which builds on their values for meaningful relationships, reflection, and personal growth.

Just last week, a group of students from the Pavlis LLC participated in the homecoming cardboard boat race. They worked collaboratively throughout the week to build a boat out of only cardboard and duct tape. I was happy to see them launch the boat as part of the race. As the boat began to sink, they didn't give up. And as it continued to sink, they chose to laugh about it and have fun. They demonstrated the Pavlis Honors College value for flexibility and agility. As the boat began to sink, they did not treat it as an obstacle to their goal of having fun and being together.

This community is led by two stellar Resident Assistants, Lucinda and Anderson. They have provided great leadership and mentorship for the community. Through the month of September, I have been impressed to see the residents grow and take ownership of the community. I see the hard work that they put in to support each other and the larger Michigan Tech community. The Pavlis Honors College values each individual and what they bring to the table. This community demonstrates this every day as they include everyone, build each others' strengths, and engage with the community around them."

The Pavlis LLC, located on the ground floor of Wadsworth Hall—Michigan Tech’s largest residence hall—offers both traditional two-person rooms and suite-style rooms with two-person occupancy and an attached bathroom, all within a building that features multiple lounges, a fitness center, a dining hall, and a vibrant residential community.

The Pavlis LLC, located on the first floor of West McNair Hall, features spacious rooms compared to most residence halls on campus, a newly renovated dining hall, and a stunning ground-floor lounge complete with a fireplace and TVs.

How to Apply

Apply for early admission to be eligible to live in the Pavlis Living and Learning Community (LLC). However, space is limited in the Pavlis LLC; therefore, we cannot guarantee placement. Priority in the LLC will be given based on the date your Housing contract is received and when you participate in roommate matching.
When you complete your housing application (Open January 15th this year), you must select that you would like to live in an LLC and then select the Pavlis LLC in the drop-down menu.
Participate in roommate matching! Those matched with a roommate are more likely to be selected for the LLC.
Please note that all final LLC selections and room assignments are determined by Housing Services.
