Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Sense of Belonging (DEIS) Strategic Plan

Timeline- The action items in this plan will be completed or have significant progress made toward them by May 2025.

1. Goal: Support university-wide efforts to minimize financial barriers to college attendance.

  • Projected Outcomes from baseline: Be able to articulate an estimate of dollars saved for students via the library programs.
  • Action Item: Compare the current textbook list to current library holdings and notify faculty who are assigning works already in our collection. 
  • Action Item: Collaborate with at least 2 instructional faculty members to transition course resources from paid materials to materials that are at no cost to students. 
  • Action Item: Increase faculty uptake of course reserve and materials selection support by 10%.

 

2. Goal: Demonstrate the library’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and sense of belonging.

  • Projected outcomes from baseline: Increase the number of staff who chose to complete diversity training to 50%.
  • Action item: Encourage library staff to engage in or renew safe spaces training and other DEIS training opportunities by having the library director announce the training two times in advance of it and describe the benefits of receiving or renewing the training
  • Action item: Encourage all staff to include an annual goal in their Performance Management plan that incorporates some form of diversity or sense of belonging training.
  • Action Plan: Review the library’s CARE standards and revise them to ensure they clearly demonstrate the library’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and sense of belonging.

 

3. Goal: Cultivate a Secure and Supportive Environment in the Library that supports learning, intellectual growth, and belonging.

  • Projected outcomes from baseline: Update library spaces so they are more welcoming to diverse groups. 
  • Action Item: Add at least one art object per year that celebrates diverse groups of people and cultures.
  • Action Item: Update the library’s meditation space to comfortably accommodate diverse groups of students.
  • Action Item: Develop asynchronous programming projects that celebrate and bring in diverse voices, specifically targeting patrons who are hesitant to participate in outreach initiatives and events that require more time or interpersonal interaction to participate. 
  • Action Item: Develop and implement an assessment plan to gauge response to changes in library spaces.

 

4. Goal: Improve accessibility of the library's physical spaces.

  • Projected outcomes from baseline: Identify and bring 2-3 barrier issues up to ADA standards.
  • Action Items: In partnership with the campus ADA Committee, complete an Accessibility Checklist building walkthrough to identify and remove barriers that prevent free movement within the building. 
  • Action Item: Renovate the circulation desk to include desk space at an accessible height for everyone.
