Boyd A. Mueller

Dr. Mueller received his BS in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Technological University in 1983, and received MS and PhD degrees in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983 and 1986, respectively. He is currently Vice President of Technology and Alloy for Arconic Engines; formerly Alcoa Howmet. In this role, Dr. Mueller leads Arconic Engines Research and Development efforts and Alloy Manufacturing Operations. His R&D efforts include strategic analysis of markets and technologies to develop market and customer technology roadmaps; developing technologies necessary for the latest generation of gas turbine engines for aircraft, and land-based power generation turbines; and leveraging academic and national laboratory resources to supplement in-house capabilities. Dr. Mueller also leads Arconic Engines three nickel base alloy manufacturing operations in Dover, New Jersey, and Exeter and Glossop, United Kingdom. Prior to his current position, Dr. Mueller was the Vice President for Technology and Research, Aerospace Sector Technical Director, Development Center Manager, Director Electronic Product Technology, Manager Process Science, and he was a member of a corporate process improvement team. In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Mueller was the technical lead for a number of consortia between industry and the US government. Prior to Arconic, Dr. Mueller worked at the Battelle Memorial Institute and Caterpillar.

Dr. Mueller holds four patents, has authored more than 25 technical papers, given numerous technical presentations, is a Fellow of the American Society of Metals, has received the UW Madison Distinguished Achievement Award, is a member of The Metallurgical Society (TMS) where he has served on the Solidification (Chair) and High Temperature Alloys Committees, has served on the National Academy of Science - NIST Review Panel and has been a judge for FIRST Robotics.

Arconic and its former identity as Howmet Corporation has a long history with the MSE Department at Michigan Tech. Arconic currently employs dozens alumni of the department and Michigan Tech, and regularly hires our students as summer interns. Boyd served one term on the MSE External Advisory Board in 2013-2016. He and his wife Brenda support the department through yearly financial gifts.
