Obtained his BS, MS, and PhD degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, in 1955, 1958, and 1959, respectively. Became a research metallurgist at E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. in Wilmington, Delaware, from 1959 until 1963, when he returned to academia at Drexel University. Served as chair of the department of Metallurgy & Materials Science at his alma mater, Carnegie Mellon, from 1971-1976.
Left Carnegie Mellon to come to Michigan Tech in the fall of 1976. Retired from Michigan Tech in May of 1996 and became emeritus professor in the fall of ’96. He was active in retirement with his consulting business, Engineering Trends, a globally recognized e-commerce firm specializing in engineering education statistics and serving universities, industry, government, and professional societies. In his spare time, Dick enjoyed traveling and camping.
