Graduated from MIT with his undergraduate degree in Physics in 1947 and a ScD in Metallurgy in 1955. Worked in research positions at New Jersey Zinc Company and American Cyanamid Company from 1955-1964.

Became Associate Professor of Metallurgical Engineering in 1964, and served as Research Engineer in the Institute of Mineral Research (IMR) from 1964 to 1970, when he became the Director of IMR. Retired in 1984 and became emeritus professor in January 1986. Wil resides in Houghton.
