Authorized users are classified as either restricted or unrestricted, depending on experience and skill level. The restricted classification, normally reserved for newly trained users, lasts for about three months. Restricted users have lab access from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
As restricted users gain (or regain) experience, they are reclassified to unrestricted status at the managing director’s discretion. An unrestricted user has card-swipe access to relevant spaces. They can access the lab 24 hours a day under the buddy system.
For hazardous lab work, the user must have a buddy observing the work at all times.
For less hazardous work, the buddy need not be present in the room, but must be aware that the experimentation is in progress. Users learn to distinguish between these scenarios during training.
