Research Reputation
Data that US News evaluated in compiling its global rankings included global and regional research reputation, publications, books, conferences, citation impact, total citations, number of publications in the 10 percent most cited, international collaboration, number of papers among the top 1 percent most cited and percentage of papers among the top 1 percent most cited.
The rankings emphasize academic research, one reason that US universities topped the charts in numbers of ranked institutions and in the 22 subject areas evaluated, said Robert Morse, chief data strategist at US News. Coming in second with the most universities ranked was China, followed by the United Kingdom, Germany and France.
Harvard University ranked number one, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
