Michigan Technological University’s College of Engineering has been ranked among the top 100 graduate engineering schools in US News & World Report’s new “Best Graduate School” rankings. Michigan Tech ranked 85th of 214 engineering schools that grant doctoral degrees.
“We are glad to see that these rankings continue to recognize the excellent education our students receive," said College of Engineering Dean Wayne Pennington.
Graduate School Dean Pushpalatha Murthy said, "We are very proud of the quality of our graduate education and the success of our graduates and happy that this continues to be nationally recognized. The high quality is due to the dedication, hard work and passion of our faculty, students and staff and we thank them for their efforts."
Five engineering specialties—chemical, civil, computer, environmental and materials engineering—rose in the rankings. Biomedical engineering was not ranked. Electrical and mechanical engineering rankings dropped slightly.
Geological and mining engineering and sciences is not ranked as an engineering specialty by US News. It is ranked with graduate science programs, under earth sciences, which were last ranked by the magazine in 2014 and will be ranked again in 2018.
Engineering Specialty Rankings
Tech’s engineering discipline rankings this year are:
- Chemical Engineering: 69th
- Civil Engineering: 54th
- Computer Engineering: 86th
- Electrical Engineering: 103rd
- Environmental Engineering: 41st
- Materials Engineering: 54th
- Mechanical Engineering: 65th
"This is good news," said David Hand, chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. "The civil and environmental engineering programs will continue to move up in the rankings as we continue to improve the quality of our graduate programs."
US News & World Report’s annual graduate school rankings are based on two types of data, according to the magazine’s website: statistical data such as student selectivity, Graduate Record Exam scores, student-faculty ratio, number of PhDs awarded, research activity of faculty and total research expenditures, and peer and employer assessment.
Rankings of engineering specialties are based solely on peer assessment from department heads in each discipline.
