Michigan Technological University's Department of Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics continues to be ranked among the nation's leaders.

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) has released its 2017 Engineering by the Numbers Report, which ranks universities in terms of student enrollment and in the number of undergraduate and graduate degrees awarded. Michigan Tech's Mechanical Engineering-Engineering Mechanics Department ranks in the top 10 nationally in both bachelor’s and master’s enrollment and in the top 25 in PhD student enrollment.

Figures show Michigan Tech had 1,447 students enrolled in bachelor’s of mechanical engineering majors, good for eighth nationally, up one spot from 2016. The 260 master’s students ranked Tech at No. 10 nationally and number two in Michigan. 2017’s 115 PhD mechanical engineering students put the University at No. 23, up three spots from a year ago.

In terms of mechanical engineering degrees granted, Michigan Tech was impressive. The number of bachelor’s degrees awarded in 2017—220—was 27th nationally. In numbers of mechanical engineering master’s degrees, the 149 Tech awarded in 2017 was sixth, up 11 from last year, and number one in Michigan. The 14 PhDs awarded pushed Tech up 15 spots from 48 in 2016 to No. 33.

ME-EM Department Chair William Predebon says the high rankings represent a group effort. “I wish to congratulate the faculty on successful student mentoring and for the significant graduate student productivity,” Predebon says. “Our entire staff deserves recognition for their excellent and dedicated support. And finally, I want to thank the University for its support."

The ASEE is dedicated to advancing innovation, excellence and access at all levels of education for the engineering profession.
