The University partners with The JED Foundation to assess and enhance mental health, substance abuse and suicide prevention efforts.
Michigan Technological University has joined the JED Campus program to support student well-being and mental health. The program identifies opportunities to enhance emotional health and substance abuse and suicide prevention efforts on campus to ensure that schools have the strongest possible mental health safety nets.
By joining the program, Michigan Tech demonstrates a commitment to the emotional well-being of its students, said Laura Bulleit, the University’s associate dean of students. JED Campus schools embark on a multi-year strategic collaboration to assess and enhance the work already being done, and foster positive, lasting, systemic change in the campus community. The program provides schools with a framework to support student mental health, along with assessment tools, feedback reports and ongoing technical assistance from the JED Campus team of clinicians.
“One of the most exciting things about the JED Campus program is that it gives our students the opportunity to help shape the delivery of mental health and substance abuse services on campus,” Bulleit said. “In addition to having students complete confidential surveys, we have invited student representatives to have an active role in our JED Campus team.”
“The college years are the age when many mental health issues first manifest, and it can be a time of significant stress and pressure,” said John MacPhee, executive director of The JED Foundation. “JED Campus helps schools by working with them to survey everything their university is doing to support their students’ emotional health and find practical ways to augment these efforts in a comprehensive way. We believe that the implementation of a campus-wide approach to mental health will lead to safer, healthier communities and likely, greater student retention.”
Michigan Tech’s membership begins by establishing an interdisciplinary, campus-wide team to assess, support and carry out program improvements. The team will conduct a confidential self-assessment survey on the University’s mental health outreach, and substance abuse and suicide prevention efforts. When the assessment is complete, JED Campus clinicians will provide a comprehensive feedback report that identifies successes and opportunities for enhancements. Over the course of four years, the University will collaborate with the JED Campus team to implement enhancements.
In addition to the Jed Foundation, JED Campus is supported by the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, the Ethel and James Flinn Foundation, the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan and the Children's Hospital of Michigan.
