Michigan Technological University and Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) have formalized a new partnership designed to expedite degree completion for engineering students transferring to Michigan Tech from NMC.

In a signing ceremony held Wednesday, Aug. 7 on NMC’s Great Lakes Campus in Traverse City, Michigan, Michigan Tech President Richard J. Koubek and NMC President Timothy J. Nelson signed seven new articulation agreements.

Under the 2+2 agreements, which take effect with the fall 2019 semester, engineering students will be able to complete their first two years of study at NMC and then transfer to Tech with junior status. In addition to ensuring a quality undergraduate education for engineering students, the agreement is intended to create a pipeline of talented students from the Grand Traverse region to Michigan Tech and highly qualified future graduates to enhance the Grand Traverse area workforce.

Engineering programs covered under the agreements include:

  • Biomedical
  • Chemical
  • Civil
  • Electrical
  • Mechanical
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Electrical Engineering Technology

"Michigan Tech believes that education is the most powerful engine for social mobility," said Koubek. "With this latest set of articulation agreements, Michigan Tech and NMC, working together, can now provide students even greater opportunities to earn a four-year degree that will position them for successful, high-paying careers right here in Michigan."

Nelson said NMC is dedicated to creating pathways for student success and to finding new ways to meet the needs of industries in the Grand Traverse region. “The new agreement with Michigan Technological University achieves both these goals,” Nelson said.

Wednesday’s signing is the result of more than a year and a half of work between the two public institutions and builds on a history of collaboration going back nearly 30 years.

It also represents the latest step in Michigan Tech’s commitment to northern Michigan’s Grand Traverse region. In March, the University announced a three-year Memorandum of Understanding designed to explore collaborative opportunities in the Grand Traverse area. The memorandum included exploration of educational opportunities and services with and through NMC.
