Biography

Wes leads the Advancement and Alumni Engagement team, telling the stories of Michigan Tech alumni and friends and helping alumni stay informed about their alma mater. He uses his 20+ years of experience at Michigan Tech to connect with audiences. Wes is a sports enthusiast with deep ties working with local youth, high school, and college athletics. He also enjoys Copper Country summers and time on the water.

Dream Jobs: Shaggy’s Skis

The Ahmeek 105s. The Mohawk 98s. The Brockway 90s. These are just a few of the Keweenaw-inspired models of downhill snow skis designed, built, and sold by Shaggy's Copper Country Skis.
Since founding the business in 2008 with his older brother Jonathon, Michigan Tech alumnus Jeff Thompson has grown it from a hobby into a regionally known brand—thanks in part to the skills he picked up while earning a mechanical engineering degree at MTU. Read More

Alumni Reunion

At Alumni Reunion 2024, Michigan Tech alumni and friends were treated to many exciting activities, including boat cruises on the Ranger III and RV Agassiz, a pasty dinner, and a celebration of the 50th anniversary of computer science at Michigan Tech. Thirty-six alums of the Class of 1974 were on hand to celebrate their 50th reunion and induction into the Golden M Society. Among the memories the new Golden M members shared was this gem from Donald Hill '74: "While at Tech, I didn't appreciate Dr. Bredekamp’s eight-hour chemical engineering Unit Operations Lab. However, I later heard a vice president of operations tell my future boss, 'If you want someone to design your plant, hire someone from MIT. If you want somebody to run your plant, hire someone who went to Michigan Tech!'" Read More

Alumni Gateway Arch Ribbon Cutting

Alumni Gateway Arch Dedicated During Commencement Weekend

A new fixture has created a tradition at Michigan Technological University. The Alumni Gateway Arch on the west end of campus was dedicated with an April 26 ribbon-cutting ceremony during commencement weekend. Afterward, students gathered for photos under the gateway in their commencement regalia.
Donations made the Alumni Gateway Arch possible. The lead donor was Mike Trewhella ’78. "It was beautiful to see students lined up with their friends and family to take photos," he said. "That really validated the meaning of this project." Read More
