
How to Have a Good Inspection
Review the Inspection questions
- Hazard / Risk Assessment - identify all hazards (required for each unique laboratory)
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) - describe each hazard and procedures to safely operate and mitigate each hazard
- Training documentation - certification that all users have been properly trained on all necessary SOPs and laboratory equipment
- Primary researcher is present and on time
- Additional staff and / or researchers present as needed
- Clear walking paths and access to exits are unobstructed
- Laboratory is clean and organized
- First Aid Kit - ANSI first aid kit with no expired products
- Fire Extinguisher is inspected regularly
- Fire sprinklers are unobstructed (18 inches)

Flammable cabinet storage
- No combustibles in / on a flammable cabinet
- Remove unneeded materials/chemicals
- Must be located at a minimum of 20 feet from an exit
- No daisy chained power strips / extension cords and all cords in good condition
- Battery Storage
- Terminals covered
- Large Batteries stored in non-corrosive container
- 36 inch clearance in front of electrical panels
- Chemicals are labeled and in appropriate containers, abbreviation list is acceptable if posted in the lab
- Staff and PI can retrieve SDS for all necessary chemicals
- Spill kit available and labeled
- Eyewash and shower tested regularly and accessible
- Eyewash tested monthly, and shower tested annually
- Hazardous liquids not stored above eye level
- Gas lines are labeled with the appropriate gas
- Tanks are secure
- Tanks segregated by type and separated at least 20 feet from flammable cabinets
- Tanks properly labeled as full, in use, or empty
- All BSL-2 laboratories require an IBC protocol

Once you have logged into LabcliQ:
- If corrective actions assigned to you are not automatically displayed, click the 'Corrective Actions' link listed under 'Inspection Findings' in the blue column on the left side of the open window.
- Verify that the 'Open Actions' tab is selected at the top of the page and the date range coincides with the inspection date.
- Click on the orange 'Manage' folder for each corrective action.
- For guidance on what you should do to resolve the open corrective action, refer to the general comments and 'Inspector Notes' listed below your name or the photograph taken during the inspection.
- To mark a corrective action as complete, it is required that you provide either a photograph or an explanation of how you resolved the corrective action.
- Click the yellow 'Photo' button to upload a picture documenting that the corrective action has been resolved appropriately.
- Click the light-blue 'Comment' button to add a description of how you resolved the corrective action.
- Click the green 'Complete' button after you have completed one of the steps listed above.
- If you do not provide an explanation or photo, the corrective action will be reopened.

- In most cases it is not appropriate to reassign a corrective action. Contact labinspections@mtu.edu if you need to reassign the corrective action to another individual.
