When building the Research Team in Cayuse, Michigan Tech tracks only tracks the roles Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator and Investigator. Note: an undergraduate applying for a fellowship is generally listed as the Co-Principal Investigator while their advisor is the Principal Investigator, or a faculty member serving as a mentor may have the role of Principal Investigator on a mentorship proposal.

A few important points regarding the research team roles:
- These are roles defined in Cayuse for Michigan Tech’s internal business purposes and may not match the person's role on the sponsor's proposal documents.
- All roles (Principal Investigator, Co-Principal Investigator(s), and Investigator(s)) are required to certify the proposal and are automatically added to the proposal approval routing chain.
- “Investigator” is a new role for tracking by Michigan Tech; in the legacy database (TechTracS) only the Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator(s) were tracked.
