The Michigan Board of Trustees Policy 7.1 On-Campus Living Requirement states:
"All single undergraduate students are required to live in University housing facilities during their first full year at Michigan Technological University. This does not include commuting students living at home with their parent(s) or guardian."
Waivers to the Board of Trustees policy may be considered in extenuating circumstances on a case by case basis. A student who is requesting a first-year student residence hall waiver must submit a request in writing to the Director of Residence Education and Housing Services at least 30 days prior to the start of the semester and also before submitting a housing application request form.
The written request for a waiver needs to include a detailed explanation regarding the extenuating circumstance. The student must include his or her name, M number, address, phone number, and email address. Please include documentation to verify the extenuating circumstance and the proposed alternative living arrangement. The letter should include the name, address, and phone number of the person the student intends to live with. A written statement from that person is necessary. Requests to live with an immediate family member over the age of twenty one will be considered. Incomplete or unverifiable requests will be denied.
