Biography
Dr. Athar Ata is a Chemistry Professor and the Chair of the Department of Chemistry at Michigan Technological University. Dr. Ata's main research interests are the isolation of new pharmaceutical agents from marine organisms, microorganisms and traditional medicinal plants, as well as the biosynthesis of natural products and microbial transformations of bioactive natural products.
Dr. Ata graduated from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad with a Master of Science degree in 1989 and the University of Karachi with a PhD in Chemistry in 1995. Most recently he served as Chemistry Professor and the Chair of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Winnipeg, where he received the Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2008. The award recognizes a University of Winnipeg faculty member who shares a dedication and love of teaching.
Dr. Ata previously sat on the Board of Regents at the University of Winnipeg and The University of Winnipeg Senate. Dr. Ata enjoys contributing to scientific literature and is a fundraising advocate for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
