Proposal to Shelve the Computer Science -Software Engineering Concentration (SCS5)

3. Plan to complete all enrolled and returning students
There are no students currently enrolled in the concentration. Any returning students
will continue through graduation following the degree audit of their enrollment year.
We do not anticipate any problems in accommodating returning students because all
the required courses for SCS5 are also required courses in the existing Software Engineering
degree program (SSEN).
4. Reason for shelving
The Bachelor of Software Engineering Degree (SSEN) became effective as a major in
Fall 2003, at the same time as the creation of the Software Engineering Concentration
(SCS5) under the Computer Science Degree. The degree and the concentration were quite
similar, one difference being that the concentration had one semester of senior design
rather than a yearlong capstone project. We have since then decided that it better
serves the students who have an interest in software engineering to take the Software
Engineering Degree. Therefore, we are shelving the Software Engineering Concentration
(SCS5).
5. Financial impact (if any) to the department and university
We do not anticipate any costs related to the shelving. The Software Engineering Concentration
(SCS5) has not been advertised in Computer Science Department or College of Computing
literature for several years. The existing Software Engineering degree program offers
a robust software engineering learning experience for Michigan Tech students.
