The University Senate of Michigan Technological University
Resolution 7-20
Emergency Resolution: Sense of the Senate to Condemn Hate Speech, Hate Crimes, and Ethnically and Racially Motivated Intolerance
(Voting Units: All)
INTRODUCED BY: Carlos Amador
On September 21, 2019, it came to the university’s attention that our local synagogue was brutally targeted by anti-Semitic hate speech. Swastikas were painted on the historic temple, in an obvious reminder to the age of Hitler’s Nazi regime. Thankfully, many in the community rallied with our neighbors to clean the surface and support the temple.
The University Senate hereby goes on record as officially condemning this particular act, and all types of hate speech, hate crimes, and racially motivated intolerance. Michigan Technological University stands for respect, tolerance, and inclusion for all members of our society, and as a representative body for the University Faculty and Staff, we reiterate our support for this stance. As President Koubek has recently said, we stand unified, and denounce such acts that are fundamentally incompatible with the mission and ethics of the University.
