Department Awards
Provost Scholarship Award
Each academic department nominates one student to represent their department as its Departmental Scholar. From the collective departments, one student is selected to receive this award.
The Provost’s Award for Scholarship is given to a senior who best represents student scholarship at Michigan Tech. This outstanding student is considered excellent not only by academic standards, but also for participation in research scholarship activity, levels of intellectual curiosity, creativity, and communication skills.
Undergraduate Awards
The Social Sciences Department supports undergraduate awards each year. The nomination cycle for the awards is March 1 - April 15. Nominations are due in W12 of the Spring semester and awards are announced in Week 14. The Chair confers awards at the annual Social Sciences Reception for Graduating Social Sciences students.
Outstanding Senior Award
The Department of Social Sciences Outstanding Senior Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate achievement in accomplishments in academics, research, leadership, and/or service.
Undergraduate Research Awards
The Undergraduate Thesis or Research Awards recognizes a Social Sciences Junior or Senior and exemplary research as evidenced in original research, undergraduate thesis, or creative project under the guidance of department faculty members or other mentors. The awardees are recognized for research that is original and substantive given the standards of the discipline.
Community-Based Research Prize
The Community-Based Research Prize recognizes a Social Sciences Junior or Senior who is actively engaged in community-based research, a pillar of the department's mission. The prize honor's the student's efforts to enhance community capacity, build relationships, and/or support community participation in research.
Service and Leadership Award
The Service and Leadership Award recognizes a student majoring in the Department of Social Sciences who has made substantial contributions to the department, campus, and/or wider community through their leadership and active participation to serve the community.
