You will start from scratch from an empty case and end with a fully functioning computer while learning the purpose of each component. Back in the lab you’ll go over how to edit photos using photoshop to really make those nature photos pop! **This course is now full for 2024** Clever design isn’t the only thing that makes electronic devices so functional and appealing. The fabrication processes that produce the microelectronics embedded in your cellular phone, computer, or tablet make use of some of the most highly specialized and extraordinary technologies of this generation. Your cellular phone likely has transistor features at or below 20 nanometers in length - less than 0.0001 times the diameter of a typical human hair! During this week, you will be introduced to several categories of microfabrication processing technologies required to produce microelectronic devices and integrated circuits, learn about semiconductors, insulators, and metals, and be hands-on processing in a well controlled setting in our micro- and nanofabrication facility at Michigan Tech. You will fabricate a demonstration device that will be packaged to take home with you. **This course is now full for 2024** Explore the forests, streams and lakes of the Keweenaw Peninsula while learning how land is sustainably managed for recreation, wildlife, timber, water quality, soils, and cultures that rely on their surrounding ecosystems! See nature from natural resource professionals’ perspective and gain skills to manage forests and other resources. Learn how environmental scientists and managers are working to maintain the health and beauty of our forests and the wildlife and human communities that depend on them. And see some of the most pristine and beautiful parts of the Upper Peninsula. This course has an additional lab fee of $50.

Ship to Shore: Freshwater Ecology

Course Details
Study Lake Superior watershed ecology, both on land and aboard the Schooner Inland Seas! In this program, you will learn how to design your own research study as we compare freshwater ecosystems from both streams and lakes. What makes each unique? Come find out through scientific inquiry! This is a field-immersion experience, you'll be outside collecting your samples and conducting analyses. Days one and two will take place on, or near the MTU campus. Days three to five will involve sailing from Houghton to Marquette aboard the Schooner Inland Seas. Study groups will present their research upon completion of the voyage in Marquette. This course is operated in partnership with Inland Seas Education Association and the Center for Science and Environmental Outreach at Michigan Tech. Participation in Ship to Shore has an additional lab fee of $500.

Course Details
Throughout the week you'll explore the world of investing. After a few basics, you'll be placing your first trades and buying and selling securities on Monday morning! The MTU Trading Room emphasizes stock, options and ETF trading, intermixed with the information all investors need to make good decisions about managing their portfolios. The best way to learn about the investment markets is to explore and experiment. That’s what we’ll spend our week doing, with the emphasis on experimentation through analyzing, buying and selling securities. Our trading platform uses live market data for an experience that simulates actual securities trading. You'll finish the week with individual presentations about your investment experience: how and why you traded and, most importantly, the important lessons learned during your time in the MTU Trading Room. By the end of this SYP, you will be ready to start investing your money for your financial future.This course has an additional lab fee of $20.

Railroads, the high tech and environmentally sensitive transportation mode! Don't believe us? Come and learn why railroads remain the most energy-efficient transportation mode and what forms modern railroad track, equipment, and communications/control systems might take. Learn how rail compares with other modes and leads the charge in reducing transportation greenhouse gas emissions! Find out how it all works through virtual sessions, hands-on activities, and plenty of field visits to railroad facilities. This program entails virtual programming at your home on Monday/Tuesday, travel to the host site on Wednesday, and in-person activities on Thursday/Friday. During the supplemental application, you will be asked to choose a host site. Each site will have 20 seats and you will be asked to rank your preference for the sites. Your preference and the number of students signing up for each site by the application deadline will be used to place you in a particular host site. **This course is now full for 2024** Wildlife Ecology and Conservation will teach students outdoor field skills and offer a comprehensive exploration of the intricate ecosystems that form the backbone of our natural world. This immersive course delves into ornithology, herpetology, mammalogy, and more by using technology such as radio telemetry, camera traps, and GPS units. Identification, behavior, and conservation of birds, reptiles, fish, and mammals will be covered as we discuss larger systems to do with climate change, forest succession, and biodiversity. This class equips students with the essential skills and insights needed to contribute meaningfully to the conservation and sustainable management of our planet's precious biodiversity with a focus on wildlife. This course has an additional $50 lab fee.
