New Funding

Haiying Liu (Chem) is the principal investigator (PI) of a project awarded a second supplementary grant of $100,000 from the National Institutes of Health, bringing the total funding for the project to $588,495.

The ongoing project is titled "Near-infrared Fluorescent Probes for Sensitive Detection of NADH in Live Cells."

Rudy Luck (Chem) is a co-PI on this three-year project.

The new supplementary grant will facilitate the acquisition of a state-of-the-art Shimadzu liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer to enhance the investigators' research capabilities. The instrument features electrospray and APCI ionization methods and is supported by a nitrogen generator. It will be incorporated into the undergraduate curriculum for CH4211 and CH4212 Bioanalytical Chemistry lecture and lab sections.

Previously, a first supplementary grant of $18,995 from the NIH enabled the acquisition of a cell incubator with precise oxygen level control. This equipment has provided substantial benefits for studying NAD(P)H levels in live cells during drug treatment, enhancing accuracy, reproducibility and the ability to replicate specific physiological conditions.

The overarching goal of this research is to design and develop near-infrared fluorescent probes that enable precise and quantitative analysis of NAD(P)H concentration changes within the mitochondria of live cells, particularly within the glycolysis pathway. This comprehensive study will delve into various metabolic processes and investigate the dynamic changes occurring during mitophagy, induced by cell starvation, drug treatment and bacterial and viral infections. Ultimately, the research aims to deepen our understanding of crucial physiological and pathological processes.
