The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being provides limited access to a nurse
practitioner, who is able to prescribe and manage psychiatric medication. A student
must be referred to the nurse practitioner by a counselor at the Center for Student
Mental Health and Well-being. Medication works best in conjunction with psychotherapy.
Check out our frequently asked questions for additional details.
Note: the nurse practitioner does not prescribe or manage ADHD medications.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an appointment with the nurse practitioner?
To get an appointment with the nurse practitioner a counselor from the Center must
refer you.
Will the nurse practitioner know what I'm working on in counseling? Will my counselor
know what I have discussed with the nurse practitioner?
Yes. Your counselor works together with the nurse practitioner to monitor the progress
and concerns of each student.
Is there any cost to meet with the nurse practitioner?
No. If you are currently enrolled, you can meet with the nurse practitioner for free.
However, if you are prescribed a medication, it is your responsibility to cover that
cost.
Will my parents find out?
All consultations with the nurse practitioner are confidential. The nurse practitioner
will not release any information without your written consent. However, if you are
prescribed a medication that requires your insurance to be billed, your parents may
find out that way. If this is a concern, please address it with the nurse practitioner
during your meeting.
Will I be able to get a prescription for ADHD or ADD through the nurse practitioner?
No. The nurse practitioner is unable to prescribe stimulant medication. Your counselor
will be able to refer you to a physician if you have a diagnosis of ADHD or to a psychologist
for testing.
Can I see the nurse practitioner if I am seeing a counselor in the community or through
TELUS Health?
No. Students must be referred to the nurse practitioner by an on-campus counselor.
If a student is receiving counseling outside of the Center, we refer them to a community
health provider for medication needs.
