SURFs are open to all Tech undergraduates who have at least one semester remaining after the summer.

Summer stipend awards of $4,000 are available. Program requests for applications are announced in Tech Today beginning in December, with applications for these annual awards due in February.

Fellowship recipients will conduct a research project under the guidance of a Michigan Tech faculty mentor, during the summer semester.

FOR 2024 - Additional fellowships will be available for students conducting research related to sustainability and resilience, thanks to a financial commitment from the MTU Tech Forward Initiative on Sustainability and Resilience.

Fellowship recipients are required to:

  • Submit interim reports of their progress through the summer
  • Attend four professional development meetings, which typically occur once a week in June
  • Present their research at the Michigan Tech Undergraduate Research Symposium, or at a professional conference in their field

If you have questions about the application process, please email honors@mtu.edu.
