The AFM is a safe instrument, but the user should observe general precautions prior to using the instrument.
Voltage and Current
The system uses high voltages and currents of up to 165 V and 0.5 A, respectively.
Make sure to turn off the controller before connecting or disconnecting anything to it. If you notice any cuts or tears in the sheathing of the cables or any frayed wires, do not use the AFM. Contact lab staff immediately.
Diode
The AFM head contains a laser-like superluminescent diode (SLD).
The light emitted from the SLD is near infrared and cannot be seen with the human eye. There is a tilt switch in the head that automatically turns off the light source when the head is tilted 30° or more from the scanning position. Since the light cannot be seen, there is no real way to confirm that the tilt switch is working. For that reason, never look down the opening of the AFM head without turning off the instrument and unplugging the head completely.
Weight
The AFM head is quite heavy, so use both hands whenever moving it.
