Early College FAQs

Yes. If you are admitted to Michigan Tech, you will be considered for merit-based scholarships available to incoming first-year students. You are also welcome to apply for competitive scholarships available to incoming first-year students, including the Leading Scholar Award, FIRST Robotics Scholarship, Summer Youth Scholars, and Visual and Performing Arts Talent Award. All incoming first-year students are required to live on campus for the first year. If you are receiving a merit-based scholarship, there is a two year live-on requirement.

All of our programs are designed to be completed in four years (eight semesters) provided you come in ready to start in Calculus 1 or beyond. Transferring in courses from another institution may shorten your time on campus depending on what degree requirements they fulfill.

Students interested in mechanical engineering, computer science, or software engineering may need to be on campus for a minimum of three years to complete their degree.

• Mechanical engineering majors are required to complete a sequence of courses that takes a minimum of three and a half years. If you are planning to major in mechanical engineering and are in an Early College program, we recommend finding a course that will transfer to Michigan Tech as Engineering Analysis and Problem Solving (ENG 1101) and Engineering Modeling and Design (ENG 1102) to shorten your time on campus to two-and-a-half years.
• Computer science or software engineering majors will need to be on campus a minimum of three years.

Several majors at Michigan Tech require you to take a specific set of courses in a specific order. Mechanical engineering majors are required to complete a sequence of courses that takes a minimum of three and a half years. If you are planning to major in mechanical engineering and are in an Early College program, we recommend finding a course that will transfer to Michigan Tech as Engineering Analysis and Problem Solving (ENG 1101) and Engineering Modeling and Design (ENG 1102) to shorten your time on campus to two and a half years.

This is an important decision made between you and your family. Some factors to consider as you decide are:

• What college am I considering after I graduate high school and what major will I pursue?
• What courses can I take while enrolled in my Early College program?
• Will the courses transfer to courses meaningful to my major, or only fulfill general education requirements?

While an Early College program is a great way to earn college credit and get a jump start on your degree while still in high school, it is important you take meaningful courses based on the major you plan to enroll in.

Math plays a critical role in many majors at Michigan Tech and degree programs are designed to be completed in four years provided you come in ready to start in Calculus 1 or beyond. If you are not at this level upon entering Michigan Tech, you may be limited on the academic courses you can take until you reach this level of math proficiency.

An Early College program allows students to earn a high school diploma along with an associate’s degree—or up to two years of college credit—at the same time. These programs are offered through select school districts across the country. Dual enrollment, also referred to as Post-Secondary Enrollment Options or College in the Schools, gives high school students the opportunity to attend at least one high school course while simultaneously attending a degree-granting postsecondary institution.

Students traditionally visit campus between their sophomore and last year of high school/Early College. Campus tours are offered twice daily, Monday through Friday, whenever school is in session, including the summer months. Saturday tours are offered during the during the fall and spring semesters. If you’re participating in an Early College program, you should apply by November 1 of your last year in the program, also referred to as your fifth or 13th year. Students that apply by November 1 receive priority consideration for admissions, financial aid, and scholarships.

Some scholarships require an earlier application deadline, such as the Leading Scholar Award, Summer Youth Scholars, or FIRST Scholarship. Apply for these scholarships during your last year in the Early College program.

No. Although you completed college coursework, students completing an Early College curriculum are considered first-year degree-seeking students when enrolling at Michigan Tech.

Your college transcript will be evaluated for equivalent courses at Michigan Tech. You must earn a grade of C or better for college credit to transfer. Most transfer credits usually satisfy our general education requirements. It is possible you will enroll at Michigan Tech with credits that will not directly satisfy bachelor degree requirements. Proper planning is necessary to determine if an Early College program will save you time toward degree completion.
