IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Pests

As the weather warms up, pests such as mice, ants, cockroaches, and squirrels
become more active in search of food and shelter.

Help prevent pests by:

  • Removing all food and other attractants from windows, balconies and patios.
  • Keeping windows closed when unattended or when food is present.
  • Cleaning up food spills and crumbs promptly.
  • Reporting pest sightings immediately using the maintenance request form on
    our website. mtu.edu/facilities/request-services/repairs-maintenance/

If You Notice A Pest:

If you see signs of mice, ants, cockroaches, or other pests, submit a maintenance request through
the online portal. Facilities will provide appropriate treatment or schedule pest control services
at no charge.

Keeping pests out is a shared responsibility. Thank you for being a good neighbor
and helping maintain a clean and comfortable community.

Grills

For the safety of all residents, grills are not permitted at Daniell Heights. Open flames and grills
present a fire risk near apartment buildings and balconies.

Thank you for helping keep our community safe.

Bike Registration

Michigan Tech Public Safety and Police Services offer free bicycle registration
for students, faculty, and staff.

Benefits of registration:

  • Helps identify and return lost bicycles
  • Assists with the recovery if a bicycle is stolen
  • Provides proof of ownership

Complete the online Bicycle Registration Form mtu.edu/publicsafety/services/bicycle/ using your Michigan
tech ISO login to receive a registration decal. Your decal will be mailed to the local address provided
on the registration form. Once received, affix the decal to the frame of your bicycle.

We recommend using a secure lock whenever your bicycle is parked on campus.

If your bike is lost of stolen, please contact Michigan Tech Public Safety and Police Services at 906-487-2216.
Information about the bicycles that have been found on campus is available on the Lost and Found webpage. mtu.edu/publicsafety/services/lost-found/. If you believe a recovered bicycle may be yours, please contact Public Safety for assistance.

Residents should store bicycles in the covered bike storage area located alongside the apartment buildings.

Lawn Mowing

Thursdays and Fridays this summer. Please be sure to remove any bikes, toys,
or other belingings. We appreciate your cooperation.

Summer Safety Tips

Summer brings warmer temperatures and more outdoor activities. Keep these safety tips in mind:

Beat the Heat

  • Drink water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. If you're active, aim for one cup (8oz)
    every 15-20 minutes.
  • Keep blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day.

Watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including heavy sweating, dizziness, nausea. Heat stroke which includes
lack of sweating, confusion, and high body temperature is a medical emergency-call 911 immediately.

Protect Yourself Outdoors

  •  Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen and reapply every two hours, or immediately
    after swimming or sweating.
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Use insect repellant containing DEET or Picaridin and check for tick
    after spending time outdoors.

Enjoy the Water Safely

Whether it's pool or a local lake:

  • Designate a "Water Watcher." When groups are swimming, designate one adult to
watch the water without distractions (no phones/books) for 15-minute shifts.
  • Wear a properly fitted life jacket. Ensure life jackets are U.S. Coast Guard-approved
and fit properly (they shouldn't slide up past the chin when pulled).
  • Store pool toys and "floaties' away from the water's edge when not in use so children
aren't temped to reach for them and fall in.
  • Stay alert around lakes, rivers, and pools.

Tip of the Month

Take Mini Breaks

Life can be busy and exhausting, and it's easy to feel like you're constantly
waiting for the long weekend. Try building small breaks into each day. You
might try taking a 10-minute walk without your phone during lunch or
before dinner. That short time away can give your mind a chance to slow
down, your body a chance to move, and your nervous system a moment
to settle. Even a few quiet minutes to breathe, notice your surroundings,
and reconnect with yourself can be a gentle way to lower stress and care for
your mental wellbeing.
