Transfer Academic Information

General Education

All students are required to complete the University's general education curriculum in addition to major-specific course work. During your first two years, you will take four core courses:

  • Composition (UN1015)—3 credits
  • Global Issues (UN1025)—3 credits; the Modern Language Option is one semester of a 3000-level language course or higher
  • Humanities/Fine Arts—3 credits from the list of 2000-level courses
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences—3 credits from the list of 2000-level courses

For additional information, see the University Catalog.

Transfer Credits

In many cases, you will be permitted to transfer courses from other institutions to satisfy general education requirements. Check with the Michigan Tech Transfer Services Office to find out which courses qualify before taking a class elsewhere.

Minors

Michigan Tech offers a variety of minors to broaden your academic study. A typical minor consists of 16–20 credits. For more information about minors or other degree options, see the Undergraduate Catalog.

Important Scheduling Info for Engineering Majors

To enroll in ENG1101 - Engineering Analysis and Problem Solving and ENG1102 - Engineering Modeling and Design, transfer students must complete the on-line spatial visualization test. To gain access to the test, contact efadvise@mtu.edu using your Michigan Tech email. If you have questions about scheduling or which classes you will need to take, contact your academic advisor.

Engineering students will be automatically scheduled for their core courses based on their math ACT score, Advanced Placement Test score, or the results of their online Math Placement Test. Any additional courses will be scheduled during Orientation.

If you have questions about the first-year engineering program or scheduling, contact Engineering Fundamentals at efadvise@mtu.edu or call 906-487-3057.
