All Summer Youth Programs include course tuition and meals. Participants can stay overnight in the Michigan Tech residence halls, or stay off-campus with a friend or family member. More information is included below.
Residential (or “live-in”) students stay in Wadsworth Hall (“Wads”), during their time at SYP.
- Live-in students receive a meal plan for the week.
- Linens and towels are provided in each room.
- Only SYP students and staff with designated access can swipe into our floors.
- Male and female students will stay on separate secure floors.
- Gender inclusive housing options are available upon request.
- We divide students into smaller groups (“halls”), each with a Residence Counselor
assigned to them.
- The RCs are the ones who check in with students each evening, host hall meetings, and make sure that everyone is doing well.
- SYP is a great opportunity to meet new people, and we take care to match students
with roommates who are similar in age but different in other areas (like geographic
area, for example).
- If you want to stay with a sibling or friend, you must indicate so in your CampDoc profile that you'll receive after acceptance.
- Remember, both you and your friend must request each other on your forms or you will not be placed together.
Wondering what to bring for a week in Wadsworth Hall? Check out our what to pack page to learn more. Additional information will also be sent with your Welcome Letter in the weeks leading up to your program.
The live-in cost for this summer is $1125 and includes course tuition, program fees, meals, room, and board—see tuition and fees for more information.
Commuter students attend camps/explorations during the day, but stay off-campus with
a friend or family member in the Houghton area during the evenings. Some commuters
are local students, while others stay with family, for example camping or in a hotel.
The Summer Youth Programs office will need the student's local address and phone number,
and the participant must agree to follow all live-in student rules while on campus.
Commuter students receive a meal plan that covers their dinner on Sunday, lunch and
dinner Monday to Thursday, and lunch on Friday. In addition, commuters are encouraged
to stay after class (as late as 9:30pm) and participate in the evening activities
and games with other participants.
The commuter cost for this summer starts at $695 and includes course tuition, program fees, and meals—see tuition and fees for more information.
Can’t choose just one exploration? No problem! Every summer, some students register for more than one week of SYP and spend a few weeks with us. Over the weekend(s), you will be able to keep your housing, meal plan, and supervision. In addition, we make sure that stayover students get to experience the Upper Peninsula through activities such as:
- Day trip to Copper Harbor
- Hiking in the Keweenaw Peninsula
- Adventure Mine tours
- Going to the movies and local beaches
- Attending local festivals or events
If you’re staying with us over the weekend, a stayover fee of $150 per weekend will cover room and board, supervision, meals (both in the dining hall and during away trips), and any applicable excursion expenses. We try our best to make sure that stayover participants keep the same room, but we cannot guarantee this. Stayovers are not permitted between SYP 2 and SYP 3 due to the 4th of July holiday.
Both live-in and commuter students may opt to drive themselves to campus. However, please be aware that:
- Any student bringing a vehicle will be responsible for purchasing a parking pass ($20 per week) from the SYP front desk.
- Live-in students will not be permitted to drive during the week; your keys must be turned in to the SYP front desk and will be securely stored.
