Vehicle Registration
All vehicles parked on campus must be registered with Transportation Services. Parking permits are required to park in any Campus Lots and can be purchased at the Transportation Services Office or online. Permits are only valid for the vehicles registered to the permit. Students may only register vehicles owned by them or by a member of their immediate family (parent or siblings).
Vehicles may be registered on the Michigan Tech Parking Portal or by bringing your vehicle registration to our office in the Administration Building, Room 100.

Any vehicle(s) that you register on campus will make you the responsible party for all notices, parking fees, citations, or towing expenses that the vehicle may incur while it is registered in your name.
PLEASE NOTE: License plate numbers always use the number zero (not the letter "O")
Parking Assignments
Permits purchased online can be picked up at the Transportation Services Office. Please bring a Photo ID as well as your vehicle registration if you did not update this information when purchasing your permit.
Parking is first-come, first-served for the Lots associated with each permit.
Use of Faculty/Staff Permits by students enrolled at Michigan Tech is strictly prohibited.
The Residential and Guaranteed Commuter waitlists for 2024-2025 will open on Wednesday, July 24th. The last day to sign up for the waitlist is Wednesday, August 7th. Lots will be awarded on Thursday, August 8th. Emails will be going out to Residential and Commuter students with information on signing up for the waitlist.

Your Residential Housing Student Parking Permit needs to be hung from the rear view mirror with color and permit number facing outward. Permits must be displayed at all times when parking on campus. Residential Lots are enforced for proper permit 24/7.
Permits are only valid with the vehicle(s) you have registered on campus and can NOT be transferred to other individuals. If you purchase a new vehicle, or did not update your vehicle registration when purchasing your permit online, please e-mail a copy of your vehicle registration to parking@mtu.edu and include the model and color of vehicle.
NOTE: Residential Permits are valid ONLY to students living in campus housing. If you move off-campus, you may exchange your permit for a commuter permit free of charge.
Students graduating, going on co-op or leaving, may return their permit prior to January 1 to receive a partial refund.
You only have access to the Residential Parking Lot that you have been assigned to on your permit. All Residential Lots are enforced 24/7 for proper permits, including weekends. Faculty/Staff Lots surrounding the Residence Halls are enforced between the hours of 2AM–4PM, seven days/week (7W, 15E & 15W, and Lot 16). All other Faculty/Staff Lots are enforced Monday-Friday from 7AM–4PM for proper permit. Parking in either area during the enforcement times without a proper permit may result in a parking violation. - Lot 4 is located at Hillside Place Apartments.
- Lot 7E is located behind Douglass Houghton Hall.
- Lot 17 is located behind Wadsworth Hall.
- Lot 21is located east of the UJ Noblet Forestry Building (building 18); the entrance/exit is off Garnet Street. There are two walking paths that exit the lot at 7th Avenue; one at Hubbell Street and the other at approximately Blanche Street. There is a walking path that comes between the UJ Noblet Forestry Building & the USDA Forestry Building that comes out at MacInnes Drive.
- Lot 23 is near the Student Development Complex (SDC), located between the Gates Tennis Center and the curve of MacInnes Drive turning into Sharon Ave. The lot can be accessed off of Sharon Ave or the one-way service drive that goes past the main entrance of the SDC and continues around the Gates Tennis Center to MacInnes Drive.
NOTE: Your parking permit also gives you access to park in Lot 24 when utilizing the SDC facilities. Please ensure your vehicle is returned to your proper lot each night. The Night Parking Ban is enforced campus-wide from November 1 – April 30, 2AM–7AM.
You may also park at the meters ($.25/20 minutes), or pay via ParkMobile app in visitor Lot 27. We recommend using the ParkMobile App for additional convenience if you choose to utilize the meters/visitor locations on campus. Daily and weekly visitor permits are also available for purchase at the Transportation Services Office.
The Husky Campus Shuttle operates Monday-Friday. Please visit our website for more information on shuttle routes and times.
Lots have to be cleared for maintenance throughout the year. Please watch your email for notices when you may have to move your vehicle and for instructions on where vehicles should be parked over University breaks.

You are guaranteed a parking space, but spots are first-come, first-serve for proper permit within each block. Apartment contract holders receive first preference for parking in their specified block. Apartments with multiple vehicle holders may be assigned to overflow parking.
Please Note: If you will be off-campus for an extended period of time, you must contact Transportation Services prior to your departure to make parking arrangements.

If you leave the University you must return your permit to the Transportation Services Office for a pro-rated refund (if paid in full) or to stop deductions* (if you elected for payroll deductions). If you are not going to be on campus for a period of time, you may return your permit to the Transportation Services Office for a pro-rated refund (if paid in full) or to stop deductions* (if you elected for payroll deductions).
*If you are not on payroll for any period of time and have not returned your permit and completed a Stop Deductions Form, deductions will be charged in arrears when you return to campus.
Emeriti Faculty
All retired faculty approved by the Board of Trustees for Emeriti status who will be parking on campus need to register their vehicles with Transportation Services. Bring your current vehicle registration and picture ID to Transportation Services. Emeriti have free parking privileges in Lot 27 (visitor paylot), Lot 24 (between Gates Tennis Center and Kearly Stadium), Lot 33 (Meese), Lot 18 (Forestry), if space is available. (If there are no parking spaces available, Emeriti faculty can park at the meters for $0.75 per hour or purchase a visitor permit from Transportation Services.
All University visitors must register their vehicles with Transportation Services. You may purchase Visitor Permits at the Transportation Services Office Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or purchase and print a permit online with a guest user account.
University departments purchasing visitor permits should email parking@mtu.edu - include the number of permits needed, which type - daily or weekly, and the index to charge for the permits. Permits can be picked up from the Transportation Services Office or sent through campus mail.
Metered parking is available to everyone for a fee between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Meters: can be paid with US Quarters ($0.25/20 minutes) or via ParkMobile.
- Daily Permits: $5.00
- Weekly Permits: $20.00

The ParkMobile App allows you to pay for Visitor Zone Parking from the ease of your phone. You can also receive reminders if your parking time is running low to recharge your payment and avoid receiving a parking citation.

Rozsa Performing Arts Center and Theater Parking
Lots 5, 8, 9, 14 and the visitor lot next to the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (Building 13) are open for theater parking during evening (after 4 p.m.) and weekend theater performances.
SDC and ATDC/Mineral Museum Visitor Lot Parking
SDC Lot 22 and the ATDC/Mineral Museum Lot 95 have free two-hour parking for visitors. Daily permits are available for $5.00, and can be purchased at the Transportation Services office for extended parking while visiting any of these facilities.
Bicycles park free. Register your bicycle by submitting the online form—just provide make, model, color, and serial number. You will receive a registration decal in the mail. Please contact Public Safety and Police Services at 906-487-2216 if you have any questions.
In November of 2017, Michigan Tech has been named a Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists. This is a renewal of the Bicycle Friendly University designation earned by Tech in 2013.

ALL vehicles of this type must be registered with Transportation Services. Permits are $35 (Summer Semester $25) and are only available to purchase at the Transportation Services Office.
- Designated Parking Locations for motorcycles and mopeds are available east of Lots 11 and 12, on Cliff Drive north of Dillman, at the SDC, and in Lot 24.

All trailers must be registered with Transportation Service prior to parking on campus. Permits are available to purchase at the Transportation Services Office. Trailer parking is available in the Daniell Heights overflow (V6) as designated by signs.
- Permits for the fall and spring semester are $100 (August 15 - April 30)
- Permits for the summer semester are $40 (May 1 - August 14)
Contact information needs to be kept current for communication if the trailer needs to move during winter or summer months for lot maintenance.
ALL vehicles of this type must be registered with Transportation Services. Permits are $35 (Valid August 15 - April 30)
- The University's snowmobile parking is located on the north side of Phoenix drive near the Facilities Storage Building.
Review the Michigan Secretary of State's Snowmobile Regulations.
- Michigan Tech prohibits operating snowmobiles on University property, except along Phoenix Drive.
Designated parking spaces are available to people who possess a valid disability parking placard or license plate issued by the Secretary of State after submitting a Disability Parking Placard Application. View the Secretary of State’s regulations for disability plates and placards.
Please bring your Driver's License and Handicap Placard to the Transportation Service Office to have it registered with your vehicle.
Community parking locations are available to those with a handicap placard without a campus permit – these are free spaces located by the meters on College Ave, Cliff Drive, Hubbell St, Houghton Ave, outside of the Library and in Visitor Lot 27 located by the Memorial Union Building. Michigan Tech Parking Permits are required to park within any Lots (with the exception of Lot 27) on campus. The Transportation Services Office will review permit options with you when you register your handicap placard.

Students needing temporary accommodations should contact Disability Services to discuss options available.
Faculty/Staff
Contact the Office of Institutional Equity (906-487-3310) for any accommodation requests. The Request An Accommodation paperwork may need to be completed.
The primary Michigan Tech contact can fill out and submit the completed Permit Form to Transportation Services via email to parking@mtu.edu, fax to 906-487-1446, or by bringing it to the Transportation Services Office located (Administration Building, Room 100).
Permits are free of charge to vendors/contractors.
All outstanding citations must be paid in full or appealed before receiving a permit.
Effective November 1–April 30.
Parking is permitted in designated areas with a Visitor Permit. Contact our office during normal business hours Monday through Friday 8a.m. - 5p.m. (906-487-1441) or after hours please contact the Department of Public Safety and Police Services by calling 906-487-2216 with any questions about where to park during your campus visit.
Library/Overnight parking during the parking ban
If you need accommodations to park on campus for overnight Library or Lab projects that may be running later than expected, please contact Public Safety and Police Services at 906-487-2216 to request additional time on campus. If granted, you will be assigned an area to park within a metered location. You must pay the meter with quarters beginning at 2 a.m. and for the duration of your stay, or have a daily permit to avoid any citations.
Parking Regulations
Registration
Vehicles must be registered by the first day of class each semester or by the first business day following arrival on campus. Students may only register vehicles owned by them or by a member of their immediate family (parents or siblings).
Campus Area
These regulations apply to all University property, including the Houghton campus, apartment housing, Lakeshore Center, Portage Lake Golf Course, Mont Ripley, the Ford Forestry Center, the Advanced Technology Development Center, the Mineral Museum, the Keweenaw Research Center, the Alternative Energy Research Building (AERB) and the Tech Trails.
Insurance
The University does not accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, any vehicle or the content thereof. It is recommended that owners carry personal insurance to cover such losses.
Abandoned Vehicles
No vehicle is to be abandoned on campus. A fine, plus towing costs, will be imposed on the owner of record if abandonment occurs. Vehicles without proper plates or parked for 48 hours or more in prohibited areas will be considered abandoned.
Prohibited Vehicles
Hot rods, drag-strip racers, modified stock cars, or other unconventional vehicles (except bicycles, motor-driven cycles, or motorcycles) are not allowed on campus. Vehicles must be licensed and street legal to be on campus property.
Vehicle Maintenance
All vehicles must be in good operating condition. No major repairs will be permitted on roads or in any parking areas on campus. Disabled vehicles must be towed from campus.
Speed Limit
The speed limit is 25 miles per hour on campus roads, unless otherwise posted (e.g. 15 mph throughout Daniell Heights).
Permit Placement
- It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that the permit is visible at all times. On motorcycles/snowmobiles/trailers, the decal must be displayed in plain view in the location stated when the permit was purchased to be considered registered.
- Faculty/Staff Permits must be displayed on the inside of the windshield in the lower driver corner at all times while parked on campus. Student permits must hang on the rear view mirror at all times when parked on campus.
- Temporary or visitor permits must be filled out completely and displayed from the rear-view mirror. Printable visitor permits must be displayed on the passenger’s side dashboard.
Lost or Stolen Permits
- Students/faculty/staff who lose a permit are required to purchase an additional hangtag at the rate of $50 or prorated price (whichever is less) or risk being ticketed.
